Exploring the Future of Agriculture: National No-Tillage Conference 2024

The 32nd Annual National No-Tillage Conference is scheduled for January 9-12 at the Marriott in downtown Indianapolis. It kicks off with a pre-conference workshop hosted by Hendricks County farmer Mike Starkey in Brownsburg, focusing on his water quality monitoring project with Bob Barr from IUPUI. This event, offering insights into conservation practices, requires advanced registration and includes a sit-down dinner.

Michaela Paukner, managing editor of No-Till Farmer, which organizes the event, highlights the conference's diverse learning opportunities. These include general sessions with experts, customizable classroom sessions, and daily roundtable discussions, allowing attendees to learn about successful no-till practices from a global perspective.

The conference is particularly beneficial for both new and experienced farmers interested in no-till farming. It offers a unique platform to exchange ideas and learn from seasoned practitioners, making it an ideal venue for farmers considering adopting new practices.

Prominent speakers at the conference include no-tiller and philanthropist Howard G. Buffet, who will discuss the crucial role of no-till farming in global food production. Also featured is Marion Calmer, a renowned no-till researcher, and Paul Jasa, the No-Till Innovator of the Year, who will provide insights on yield monitor calibration.

In total, the conference will offer 40 face-to-face roundtables, 25 interactive classroom sessions, and extensive networking opportunities with no-till farmers. This makes it a comprehensive event for anyone interested in no-till farming methods and their impact on agriculture and the environment.

Governor Holcomb's Next Level Agenda: Innovative Childcare Solutions in Indiana

Governor Eric Holcomb of Indiana announced a significant initiative under the Office of Early Childhood and Out-of-School Learning, providing $18.1 million in grants to 64 businesses, school organizations, and community groups. This funding, part of Holcomb's 2023 Next Level Agenda, is aimed at enhancing employer-sponsored childcare options to meet the needs of working parents. The initiative is a collaborative effort involving businesses, community groups, and schools, all working towards supporting the state's workforce and young children's education.

The program offers a variety of childcare solutions. Thirty-three employers will provide on-site childcare, and 13 will offer childcare tuition benefits. Other recipients will support childcare through different methods, like reserving seats at partner childcare centers. The funding covers several eligible expense categories, including sponsoring Dependent Care Assistance Plans (DCAPs), providing on-site or near-site childcare, establishing priority waitlist partnerships with local childcare programs, offering tuition benefits, reserving seats in local childcare programs, providing backup care options, community infrastructure investments, and implementing TriShare programs. In TriShare, childcare costs are shared between the employer, employee, and local community.

This initiative will distribute 72% of a $25 million fund in this round, with the remaining to be allocated in 2024. The allocation varies by employer size, with large employers receiving up to $750,000 each, mid-sized up to $350,000, and small employers up to $50,000. Courtney Penn, OECOSL director, expressed enthusiasm for the innovative childcare solutions that will support children's early education, crucial for their brain and social development. The program is funded partly by the state's federal COVID-19 relief funds and is supported by the Indiana Manufacturer's Association. It aims to strengthen the early care and education sector, supporting today's workforce and investing in the future.
