Brownsburg Enhances Town Website with ‘UserWay’ for Greater Accessibility

The Town of Brownsburg has introduced an innovative solution to enhance the accessibility of its website, integrating UserWay, an accessibility widget. This tool is a significant step towards creating a more inclusive online environment. It enables visitors to the website to personalize their browsing experience according to their individual needs. The widget offers a variety of visual aids and supports over 30 different languages, making the website more user-friendly for a diverse audience.

A key aspect of this initiative is the range of accessible features provided by the widget. It includes functionalities like screen reader compatibility and keyboard navigation, which are crucial for ensuring that all users, regardless of their abilities, can navigate the website with ease. The Town Council President highlighted the importance of these features in offering an inclusive digital experience to the entire community.

The commitment of the Town of Brownsburg to inclusivity extends beyond the digital realm. The town has been actively involved in developing programs, facilities, and services that cater to the diverse needs of its community. The introduction of the UserWay widget is a part of this broader effort to ensure inclusivity in all aspects of town life, including the digital space.

Located at the bottom right corner of all web pages of the Town of Brownsburg, including those of the Police, Parks, Fire Territory, and Economic Development departments, the widget is easily accessible.

It's designed to be user-friendly on both desktop and mobile devices. Users can customize various aspects of the digital content such as button types, language, text size, position, and color. Moreover, the widget provides specialized accessibility profiles to assist individuals with specific impairments like color blindness or dyslexia.

The Town Manager emphasized the importance of the UserWay widget as a crucial step in enhancing digital accessibility. This initiative is part of the town's ongoing efforts to create a welcoming and inclusive environment, ensuring that all residents, including those with disabilities, have easy and efficient access to news, information, services, and resources available on the town's website.

Families Protest Proposed End to Payments for Home Care of Disabled Relatives in Indiana

Over 50 people rallied at the Indiana Statehouse against proposed changes to the Aged and Disabled Waiver, which would stop payments to family members caring for disabled relatives in place of professional nurses.

These payments, initiated during the COVID-19 public health emergency, support families unable to find professional care, often requiring them to leave full-time jobs to provide care. The proposed changes, aimed at addressing a budget deficit and saving the state $300 million annually, have raised concerns among parents and advocates. They worry about increased hospital admissions, health risks, and financial hardships if the payments are discontinued.

The changes, if approved, will take effect in July 2024, but skepticism remains about the state's ability to find enough providers for all affected families. A petition against these changes has gathered nearly 10,000 signatures in less than a week. Public comments on the proposal are open until February 16, 2024.

Public comment can be submitted via email at [email protected] or mail at FSSA Division of Disabilities and Rehabilitative Services P.O. Box 7083, Indianapolis, IN 46027"
