Indiana House Passes Bill Restricting Timing of School Tax Referendums

The Indiana House approved a bill, HB 1376, that restricts the timing of school tax referendums, specifically limiting capital referendums to only be presented during general elections, while operating and school safety referendums can still be proposed in primary elections.

The bill, advocated by Rep. Bob Behning, aims to ensure a larger voter turnout for decisions on tax increases. Despite opposition from some, like Rep. Tonya Pfaff, who argue for local control over referendum timing, the bill passed with a vote of 52-42 and is now moving to the Senate for consideration.

Enhanced Patrols to Enforce School Bus Safety Laws Across Hendricks County

Law enforcement agencies across Hendricks county will be actively monitoring school bus stops and travel paths to identify violations of stop-arm laws and dangerous driving practices. These intensified surveillance efforts are supported by funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, allocated through the SAVE initiative, a program initiated by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute in 2019.

In the state of Indiana, it's illegal for drivers to overtake a stopped school bus when it displays flashing red lights and has its stop-arm deployed. This rule is applicable on all roadways, except for drivers on divided highways separated by a physical barrier, such as a grass median, concrete wall, or cable barrier. On such highways, drivers are obligated to halt only when they are moving in the same direction as the halted school bus.

Avery Gordon And Brownsburg Bulldogs Fall Short In Quest for Consecutive Sectional Titles

The girls' high school basketball sectional play began this week with the Brownsburg Bulldogs aiming for consecutive sectional titles, relying heavily on their star player, Avery Gordon.

Gordon, a 6-foot-5 standout averaging 21 points and nearly 10 rebounds per game, is recognized for her remarkable talent and humble attitude. Her significant contributions on the court, coupled with her academic excellence and likability among teammates and staff, have made her a top-50 national recruit committed to Purdue University.

Recently, Gordon's buzzer-beater in an overtime game against Westfield highlighted her pivotal role in the team's success. As the Bulldogs entered the tournament with a winning streak, they and Gordon started strong with a win against Avon 74 - 42 but fell short last night with a tough loss to Plainfield in the second round 73 - 62.
