Indiana Proposes Senate Bill 141 to Alleviate School Counselor Crisis

Indiana lawmakers are advancing Senate Bill 141, aimed at ensuring school counselors can dedicate more time to student services by reducing their involvement in non-counseling activities such as substitute teaching or supervisory duties.

Authored by Sen. Jean Leising, the bill responds to the state's school counselor crisis, highlighted by a notably high student-to-counselor ratio of 694 to 1, the highest in the nation. The bill mandates that from the 2024-2025 school year, at least 60% of counselors' time must focus on direct student services, increasing to 85% in the following year, with exemptions for schools having fewer than 350 students per counselor.

The move aims to address the growing demands on counselors and improve student outcomes by ensuring counselors can focus on their primary roles in emotional and career counseling. Critics of the bill call for flexibility in school staffing, while supporters emphasize the need to prioritize counselors' time for the well-being of both students and counselors themselves.

See the Indiana School Counselor Survey which was released in November 2023.

Did You Know? - Maintaining Brownsburg’s Sewer System: An Overview

The town's sewer system, comprising 140 miles of sanitary and 160 miles of stormwater lines, is maintained by six dedicated Wastewater employees with help from the Street and Wastewater departments.

Main tools include a vacuum truck for cleaning and a camera for inspection.

Regular inspections and cleanings are crucial for preventing blockages and ensuring the system's proper operation by removing debris.

Notices for maintenance are given through door hangers, and access to manholes, which should not be obstructed by landscaping, is essential for maintenance work.

Residents are urged to report sewer issues to (317) 852-1114.
