Indiana Football Coaches Consider Seeding System for Class 6A High School Tournaments

The Indiana Football Coaches Association (IFCA) is exploring the possibility of seeding the high school football tournament, specifically for Class 6A, through a proposal that might be brought forward for discussion. The initiative is led by Bob Gaddis, the executive director of IFCA, who is engaging with members through a survey to gauge interest in a two-year pilot program for seeding. This program would organize teams in the Class 6A division by ranking them from No. 1 to 16 in both the northern and southern parts of the state, aiming to formalize matchups based on team performance.

The proposal has garnered preliminary support, with over 70% of responding coaches showing interest in discussing tournament seeding and a slightly lower percentage endorsing the pilot program for Class 6A. The focus on Class 6A stems from strong support within this group, the geographic concentration of these schools in Central Indiana, and the aim to minimize travel complications that could arise with broader seeding across all classes. This approach is seen as a strategic way to gain traction for the concept of seeding within the constraints of the current system and preferences of the membership.

The IFCA plans to further discuss this initiative at its state clinic, inviting feedback and questions from head coaches to determine the level of support for moving forward with a formal proposal. This effort coincides with the upcoming reclassification of football and other team sports by the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), marking a critical timing for the proposal's consideration. The last attempt by the IFCA to introduce seeding did not advance, but the current momentum suggests a more favorable outlook for this initiative.
