Religious Accommodation in the Workplace: Kluge v. Brownsburg Decision Now Being Reconsidered

In Kluge v. Brownsburg Community School Corporation, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit initially ruled that Brownsburg High School could mandate a Christian teacher, Kluge, to use transgender students’ preferred names and pronouns, despite his objections on religious grounds.

Kluge, who requested to refer to students by their last names as a compromise, sued the school for religious discrimination after being told to adhere to the preferred names policy or face dismissal.

Initially, the court deemed accommodating Kluge's religious beliefs as an undue hardship for the school, aligning with a policy to affirm and respect all students. However, following a Supreme Court decision that redefined "undue hardship" to mean substantial increased costs rather than minimal costs, the Seventh Circuit vacated its decision, and Kluge's case is under reconsideration.

This development underscores a legal environment where federal law mandates accommodation of employees’ religious beliefs to a greater extent, barring substantial increased costs to the employer.

Major Overhaul for E. CR 400 N. Includes Culvert Replacement and New Turn Lane

Starting on or after March 1, E. CR 400 N., from Ronald Reagan Parkway to 950 E., will be closed for road reconstruction and bridge replacement. The road will remain closed through the end of June. During this time, the detour route will use E. CR 300 N.

Overview The objective of this initiative is to overhaul the section of E. CR 400 N. situated between Ronald Reagan Parkway and a point approximately 1500 feet to the west of Ronald Reagan Parkway. A key component of this overhaul involves the replacement of the existing box culvert beneath CR 400 N. In addition, the initiative plans to introduce a dedicated lane for right turns heading south on Ronald Reagan Parkway at the intersection with CR 400 N., inclusive of all related construction activities.

Timeline The project is presently in the construction stage, with timelines adjustable based on material availability and weather conditions.

  • Construction Initiation: March 2024

  • Expected Construction Completion: June 2024

  • Finalization and Close-out: July 2024

Financial Support Funding for this project is secured through a collaborative agreement with the project developer.
