Defying Odds: Patrick Frepan's Victory Over a Life-Threatening Neurological Disorder

Summary of article that originally appeared in the Indianapolis Star written by Dana Hunsinger Benbow

Patrick Frepan experienced a harrowing ordeal when he began to suffer from a rare brain infection called Bickerstaff brainstem encephalitis, leading to severe hallucinations where he imagined being trapped and unable to move or communicate effectively. Initially, he mistook these vivid experiences—such as being taken to a dirt track race in Arizona or living inside a Costco—for reality. As his condition worsened, he was misdiagnosed multiple times before finally receiving the correct diagnosis. Frepan's physical state deteriorated significantly, confining him to IU Health University Hospital with a feeding tube, as his weight dropped drastically. The hallucinations, he later learned, were influenced by his surroundings and what was playing on the TV in his hospital room.

Before his illness, Frepan was in excellent physical condition, deeply involved in coaching wrestling at Brownsburg West Middle School. However, he began to notice a decline in his abilities, prompting a series of medical consultations that eventually led to his diagnosis. His journey through the healthcare system was fraught with misdiagnoses, including suggestions of multiple sclerosis and conversion disorder, until a breakthrough came with the correct diagnosis of Miller Fisher Syndrome, a variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome, which was later identified as Bickerstaff brainstem encephalitis.

Frepan underwent intensive rehabilitation, facing and overcoming enormous challenges. He had to relearn basic human functions, such as walking, talking, and eating. With the support of his wife, family, and medical professionals, including a crucial encounter with Dr. Riley Snook, Frepan began to make strides towards recovery. Despite the physical and emotional toll, he was determined to return to his life, especially to teaching and coaching wrestling, which he did with remarkable resilience.

His story is not just a personal journey of recovery but also an inspiring testament to the human spirit's capacity to overcome adversity. Frepan's experience profoundly affected his approach to coaching, teaching, and life, emphasizing the importance of resilience, support, and never taking anything for granted.
